A New Year.. And More New Library Partners!

Muslim Christian Library

In 2012, we are partnering with Kristiyano-Islam Peace Libraries or KRIS, an organization which has it's roots in Zamboanga, in the province of Mindanao. The province of Mindanao has been plagued by terrorism and banditry, largely caused by religious differences and widespread poverty. It is the most impoverished region in the Philippines with a GDP 75% lower than the country's average. KRIS Libraries aim to promulgate peace by inviting Muslims and Christians to read together, study together, and learn together.

KRIS which shares our advocacy for children's literacy, has also started to operate libraries in Manila, through a partnership with the Claretian missionaries. In 2010, KRIS Library opened a library in Rodriguez, Rizal—the relocation site of victims of typhoon Ondoy. Later this year, they will also be opening a library in Baranggay Holy Spirit, one of the biggest and poorest areas in Quezon City. Because BKPNY believes that collaboration leads to greater impact, we are partnering with KRIS Library - by providing them with books and spreading word about their programs, BKPNY wants to help KRIS reach more children and get support for their other programs. KRIS currently has three libraries in Mindanao and would like to expand to 10 libraries.

We would like to encourage literacy supporters to join us in helping Kris Libraries to do more. In the spirit of community-led development, KRIS' direct and earnest involvement in the community where they have presence is a characteristic that BKPNY always looks for in partner organizations. Books and school supplies are welcome, but so are cash donations to help us cover our shipment expenses. If you would like to learn more about Kris Libraries, please email Arizza Nocum who is the current Executive Director at arizza.nocum@gmail.com.
