Books for the BKP-Peace Corps Project

BKP-NY is helping BKP Massachusetts and BKP Philippines collect children's books (elementary school level) for a new project in cooperation with the Peace Corps. We invite schools, community groups, and individuals to help us collect books to send to 25 schools by September 2013.

Under this Peace Corps - BKP partnership, BKP will provide books and literacy trainer training to Peace Corps volunteers and other community members. At least eight areas in the Philippines have been included in the original project document: Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental, Olongapo\Subic, Albay, Camarines Sur, Ifugao, Isabela and Batanggas. The Peace-Corp will assist with the shipment of the books.

If you or anyone you know would like to nominate a school in one of those areas, please email us at info@bkpny.org.
If you would like to collect books for any of these areas, BKP will reimburse you for the cost of the book shipment, please email us at info@bkpny.org
If you are unable to fill up a box but have some books you would like to donate, email us at info@bkpny.org so we can schedule a pick-up. We'll pack the books for you and ship it off to one of the schools.

In our experience, it doesn't take much effort to collect books and yet the rewards are immeasurable: you are opening a path for all kinds of possibilities for our children:to increase their vocabulary, to open their minds to ideas beyond what their daily lives afford them, to improve their critical thinking skills... or to simply experience a good book and have fun. We hope you can help us support BKP with this project... please help us spread the word...

Columbia University's Liga Filipina will help BKPNY collect books for our library partners, at their fall event "Taste of the Philippines" on October 12, 2012 from 6-8 PM at Lerner Hall in Columbia's Morningside campus.

The annual fall event features an all you can eat buffet of Filipino food. This year, music will be provided by the Morningsiders and Jeffers Win. Every book donation entitles you to a raffle ticket.

Visit the event page on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/events/348626765226936/
Tickets are available at https://web.ovationtix.com/trs/pe/9730201.

The purpose of Liga Filipina is to unify Columbia students interested in Filipino culture through social interaction, cultural programs and activities, educational exchange, and political awareness. We strive to promote this awareness of culture in the Columbia Community.

We embrace the footnote on the "About" Facebook page:

*You do not need to be Filipino or speak Tagalog to join Liga Filipina! All you need is an interest in the culture to join Columbia's best Filipino club! That, and an appreciation for our food. =]

Bring your friends and meet new ones - tickets are limited so get yours early!!!
